This brooch is made from wood, coated with urushi lacquer, and decorated with eggshells and mother-of-pearl in a Karakusa pattern (arabesque).

Japanese Lacquer Art (Urushi Art)
Mr. and Mrs. Sadaike own and run Takashi’s family Maki-e altar workshop. (Maki-e is a decorative technique whereby Japanese lacquer is sprinkled with gold powder). They lacquer and decorate Maki-e on a wide range of products, including Buddhist altars, shrines and temple products. They also produce personal ornaments.
